IEC 61850 based smart substations have played a significant role in smart grids, realizing information sharing and device interoperation. Increasing construction and application of smart substations globally has led to new protocols, equipment and technologies, including the IEC 61850 protocol. These developments in modern substations engender significant change in terms of testing principles and technologies, as well as operation and maintenance. At the time of writing, over 2,000 smart substations are in use in China, and many more have been built globally.
