This book presents first-hand evidence of the everyday lives of politicians, juxtaposed with media representations of the 'backstage' of politics. An innovative interdisciplinary theoretical framework is presented which deals adequately with questions of performance of politicians (in EU organizations) and with TV soaps representing the everyday lives of politicians in answering relevant questions about global and local politics. This book features a combination of critical ethnography, critical discourse analysis, pragmatics, and media studies. It is written in an accessible language and allows readers to trace andunderstand the arguments throughout the book. This book includes first hand evidence from the 'backstage of politics', collected via critical ethnography and interviews. Multi-method approach is extensively applied to examples of political rhetoric and identity constructions of politicians (Members of the European Parliament). An interdisciplinary study providing first-hand evidence of the everyday lives of politicians; what politicians actually do on 'the backstage' in political organizations. The book offers answers to the widely discussed phenomena of disenchantment with politics and depoliticization
