TRIBOLOGY – the study of friction, wear and lubrication – impacts almost every aspect of our daily lives. The Springer Encyclopedia of Tribology is an authoritative and comprehensive reference covering all major aspects of the science and engineering of tribology that would be relevant to researchers across all engineering industries and related scientific disciplines. This would be thefirst major reference that brings together the science, engineering and technological aspects of tribology of this breadth and scope in a single work.Developed and written by leading experts in the field, the Springer Encyclopedia of Tribology covers the fundamentals as well as advanced applications across material types, different length and time scales, and encompassing various engineering applications and technologies. Exciting new areas such as nanotribology, tribochemistry and biotribology have also been included.Planned as a four-volume set, the Springer Encyclopedia of Tribology will comprise an estimated 900 entries written by authoritative experts in each subject area, under the guidance of an international panel of key researchers from academia, national laboratories and industry. With alphabetically-arranged entries, concept diagrams and cross-linking features, this comprehensive work willprovide easy access to essential information for both researchers and practicing engineers in the fields of engineering (aerospace, automotive, biomedical, chemical, electrical, and mechanical) as well as materials science, physics, and chemistry. Professor Wang is currently an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Northwestern University and the Mechanical Engineering Director of Graduate Studies. She is a Member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE), and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). She is an Associate Editor for Journal of Tribology and Tribology Transactions.Professor Chung is currently Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern. He was named Fellow, ASM International; Fellow, AVS; andFellow, Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers. His other awards include the Innovative Research Award and Best Paper Award from the ASME Tribology Division, Technical Achievement Award from the National Storage Industry Consortium (now Information Storage Industry Consortium), Bronze BauhiniaStar from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Government, and Advisory Professor from Fudan University. Professor Chung served two years as program officer in surface engineering and materials design at the National Science Foundation. Professor Cheng is currently Water P. Murphy Professor Emeritus of MechanicalEngineering. He served as the Director of the Center for Surface Engineering and Tribology from 1984 to 1988 and from 1991 to 1996. In 1987, he was electedto the National Academy of Engineering for his pioneering contributions in gas, elastohydrodynamic, plastohydrodynamic, seal, and gear lubrications, as well as work on lubrication of rough surfaces and contact fatigue. He was also selected as recipient of the STLE National Award in 1987, the ASME mayo D. Hersey Award in 1990, and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers Tribology Gold Metal in 1992.Professor Keer was educated at the California Institute of Technology and theInstitute of Technology of the University of Minnesota. In 1997 he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. In 2003 he was awarded the Daniel C Drucker Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
