The aim of this reference work is to summarize current, fundamental knowledge of interfacial chemistry and bring readers up-to-date with the latest developments. The chemical and physical properties and processes at solid and liquid interfaces are the scientific basis of so many technologies which enhance our present living conditions and will maximize the future survival of mankind. The field of interfacial chemistry and its related technologies enable the design and optimization of functional materials for heterogeneous and electro-catalysts in food production, pollution control, energy conversion and storage, medical applications requiring biocompatibility, drug delivery and many other vital applications. They enable the refinement of chemicals and drug design, nano-scale materials and thin film technologies important in photovoltaic solar energy collection and other electronic devices. The designs of these materials rely more and more on low dimensionality for maximum optimization, i.e. molecular architectures, ultrathin films and wires, and nano-clusters, which are grown on supporting surfaces, and whose properties are decisively determined by their surfaces and interfaces. This so-called bottom-up approach rests on a close symbiosis of chemistry, surface science and electrochemistry. The main aim of this Encyclopedia is thus to provide the reader with an interdisciplinary view at the intersection of these three closely related scientific fields. Encyclopedic coverage: Fundamental knowledge of interfacial chemistry, surface science and electrochemistry will allow readers to understand the interrelationship between the three disciplines, paving the way for new synergetic research opportunities and technologies Interdisciplinary approach: Cutting-edge research from academics and practitioners across various fields and global regions will show how interfacial chemistry research can be applied in practice across a range of industries. Each section will also have a thorough introduction from the Section Editor, putting the articles into context both with each other and with the wider subject area Multimedia Features: 3D viewers, videos and database linking as well as hyperlinked references and further readings and cross-references will provide readers with a 'one-stop' resource to fully support their research INDICE: Ultrathin films Clusters and nanoparticles on surfaces Surface-confined polymerization Functionalization and grafting of surfaces and nanoparticles Model studies on heterogeneous catalysis Surface science under environmental conditions Surface Photochemistry/Ultrafast surface dynamics Corrosion and Passivation Interfacial electro-catalysis Molecular self-assembly at surfaces Interfacial electrochemistry Bioelectrochemistry
