This book provides a detailed overview about the mass spectrometry of numerous classes of therapeutics and agents relevant to doping control laboratories, the necessity of various analyzers enabling the detection of low- and high molecular weight drugs as well as the discrimination between endogenously produced and synthetically derived compounds. Typical assays including sample preparation, chromatographic separation and mass spectrometric analysis are presentedhighlighting the comprehensiveness of drug testing in modern doping control laboratories. Mass spectrometric data will be categorized by chemical or pharmacological groups, and principles of gas-phase dissociation behavior that enable the identification and determination of modifications will be outlined as these are of utmost importance for the unambiguousness of doping control assays.Different ionization modes will be considered including EI and ESI and explain the preference of the one or the other in relation to the selected target analytes. Subsequently, applications will be presented that outline the particular need of MS in sports drug testing. Depending on the nature of the drug, special features available only with mass spectrometry are required that enable for instance the discrimination between endogenously produced and syntheticallyderived steroids or modified and natural insulin.
