The mathematical theory of democracy deals with voting systems, choice principles and choice restrictions, their logical implications, selection of representatives who make decisions on behalf of the whole society, etc. The approach of this book is based on operationalizing the notion of representativeness with corresponding indicators: (a) popularity is a spatial characteristic of representativeness, the average percentage of the population whose opinion is represented on a number of questions; and (b) universality is a temporal aspect of representativeness, the frequency of cases (percentage of questions) when the opinion of a majority is represented. These indicators are used to evaluate single representatives (e.g. president), and representative bodies (e.g. parliament and council of ministers). ?
