The recent introduction of active and passive structural control methods has given structural designers powerful tools for performance-based design; however, structural engineers lack the tools for the optimal selection and placementof such systems. In this book, Takewaki brings together most the reliable, state-of-the-art methods in practice around the world, arming readers with a real sense of how to address optimal selection and placement of passive control systems. He explains in detail optimality criteria-based and optimal sensitivity-based design algorithms for passive control systems in building structures. By showing that displacement and acceleration are regarded as two major targetindices for performance-based design, the author demonstrates that once the building frames and passive control systems are modeled appropriately, the optimal quantity and placement of passive control systems are determined automatically. Structural systems treated in this book include fixed-base shear buildings, fixed-base moment-resisting frames, fixed-base three-dimensional buildings, shear buildings with and without tuned mass dampers on surface ground, bending-shear buildings on surface ground. Both the transfer functions and earthquake responses are introduced as the performance indices. He includes design implications of dampers with load and model uncertainties as well as the theoretical background of passive control systems from the view point of earthquake input energy.
