The use of various pharmaceutical nanocarriers has become one of the most important areas of nanomedicine. Ideally, such carriers should be specifically targeted to the pathological area to provide the maximum therapeutic efficacy. Drugs targeting to disease sites has been desired owing to enhanced therapeutic responses of the drugs at lower doses as well as prevention of their side effects on other normal tissues. Such delivery of drugs aims to minimize drug degradation and inactivation upon administration, prevent undesirable side effects, and increase drug bioavailability and the fraction of drug delivered in the pathological area. This book reviews the principles and applications of nanocarriers for targeted drug delivery. Drug targeting involves active and passive strategies that exploit use of ligands for interactions at target sites and physical and chemical properties of the nanocarriers and micro-environment of target site respectively. Multidrug resistance and adverse side effects associated with anticancer drugs have attracted greater scientific attention and led the formulation scientists to target these drugs specifically towards target sites. Nano-carriers like liposomes, niosomes, gold nanorods, carbon nanotubes, and micelles are widely used for delivering drugs to specific disease sites. This is an important reference source for researchers in the biomedical and biomaterials fields who want to gain an understanding of how nanotechnology is used for earlier diagnoses and more effective cancer treatment. Explores the fundamental principles of drug targeting through different nano-carriers, highlighting major applicationsShows how the use of nanocarriers is leading to quicker cancer diagnosis and more effective treatmentDiscusses the major challenges of using nanocarriers for drug delivery and assesses how to overcome these barriers INDICE: 1. Potential physical and biological barriers leading to failure of cancer chemotherapy2. Nanotechnological strategies involved in the targeted delivery of anti-cancer drugs3.
