This book is about the contribution psychology can make to feminist theory and action. It is also about the failure of traditional academic psychology to address key feminist concerns and the implications of this failure both for psychology and for feminist scholarship itself. Central to the book is the author's examination of the role of psychoanalytic perspectives, frequently rejected within academic psychology, for feminist psychological analysis. In her theorizing of gender, patriarchy and the possibilities for individual and social change, Selby draws on the important insights offered by a psychodynamic analysis, while also recognizing and addressing the issues posed when theory development is divorced from empirical studies as in much current work from a psychoanalytic standpoint.
