Capital and the debt trap: learning from cooperatives in the global crisis

The financial crisis is destroying wealth but is also a remarkable opportunity to uncover the ways by which debt can be used to regulate the economic system. This book uses four case studies of cooperatives to give an in-depth analysis on how they have braved the crisis and continued to generate wealth. CLAUDIA SANCHEZ BAJO holds a PhD in development studies (ISS, The Hague), has been a lecturer in Germany and China and has built linkages between the Mercosur unit for cooperatives, RECM, and EU institutions in Brussels. She has published many titles, including 'The Political Economy of Regionalism bBusiness Actors in Mercosur in the Petrochemical and Steel Industrial Sectors' (2001), and contributed to 'The Political Economy of Regions and Regionalisms' (2005). Other research fields include globalization, business groups and chains, and policy making such as the IFRS -International Financial Reporting Standards.She is a freelance consultant in Brussels as well as a certified translator and editor in chief of 'Chine Actuelle'. BRUNO ROELANTS, Master in labor studies (ISS, The Hague), is secretary general of CICOPA, the sectoral organisation of the International Cooperative Alliance for industrial, artisan and service cooperatives, and of its regional organization CECOP CICOPA-Europe. He was previously in charge of development projects in China, India and CentralbEastern Europe. He took part in the 2001b2002 negotiations on the ILO Recommendation 193 on the Promotion of Cooperatives in Geneva, and coordinated the work of representatives sent by national confederations of cooperatives. He has lectured on cooperatives and local development in Italy. He edited 'Cooperatives and Social Enterprises bGovernance and Normative Frameworks' (CECOP, 2009), and co-authored 'Cooperatives, Territories and Jobs' (CECOP, 2011).
