Molecular quantum electrodynamics: long-range intermolecular interactions
Salam, Akbar
The theory of molecular quantum electrodynamics (MQED) has been developed andapplied with considerable success to a vast number of radiation-molecule and molecule-molecule processes. The overall objective of the proposed book will be a presentation of the application of the MQED formalism to long-range intermolecular forces. The book will begin with brief, introductory, background material on the quantum theory of matter-field interaction suitable for subsequenttreatment of inter-particle interactions. Alternative chemical and physical viewpoints, and calculational techniques, will then be delineated for the evaluation of the energy shift and transfer rate associated with specific two- and many-body forces. The former includes computational approaches such as perturbation theory, response formalism, and the method of induced multipole moments. The latter includes phenomena such as the resonant exchange of energy, retarded dispersion forces, intermolecular interactions in the presence of a radiation field, and discriminatory effects occurring between chiral molecules.
