Making RTI work: how smart schools are reforming education through schoolwide response-to-intervention
Sailor, Wayne
For the past several years Wayne Sailor has been directing a major national study in the area of Response-to-Intervention and Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The conclusions drawn fromthis work are applicable to all schools, whether urban, suburban, or rural. Why shouldn't a high-performing suburban school be able to move to the next level and become a much higher performing school? Why shouldn't an inner-city low-performing school become a high-performing school? We know from experience that we can no longer blame the children, or their parents, or their race, culture or neighborhood if those children fail to learn. The lessons from the outstanding successes of the few schools that moved from poor to great through response-to-intervention need to be made available to many, and Sailor's book was written to address this need. Making RTI Work- written for school and districtleaders, general and special education teachers, and parents- reveals these successful schools' framework for success. Section I, The Origin and Design of Schoolwide RTI, lays out the essential framework for change that is embodied in RTI. Section II, How Schoolwide RTI Works, offers a step-by-step process forputting the various components of RTI into motion in the school and in the classroom. Section III, Seeing RTI in Action, shows what RTI looks like at the individual school, district, and statewide levels. The Conclusion, The Shape ofSchools to Come, offers a glimpse of the potential future of schoolwide RTI in helping to take American education to the next level.
