Multicast in third-generation mobile networks: services, mechanisms and performance
Rümmler, Robert
Gluhak, Alexander Daniel
Multicast in IP networks has been an active research topic for several years.Topics of continued interest are multicast routing, group management, reliable packet delivery, addressing and security, just to name a few. The application of multicast for mobile networks gained wide-spread attention only recently. In 2005, a multicast/broadcast mechanism for the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) third-generation network was standardized: The multimediabroadcast multicast service (MBMS) is a unidirectional point-to-multipoint bearer service in which data are transmitted from a single source entity to multiple recipients. This book introduces the fundamentals of multicast in fixed and mobile networks and describes the state-of-the-art of multicast in third-generation networks by detailing the mechanisms and protocols of MBMS.
