International Arbitral Awards are of considerable importance, for they are a “subsidiary means for the determination of the rules of law” as provided in Article 38 of the Statue of the International Court of Justice. They are also important from the point of view of the progressive development of internationallaw. The present volume of the United Nations Reports of International Arbitral Awards consists of a collection of awards and similar decisions relating toa particular field of international law, namely the delimitation and demarcation of international boundaries. It contains awards handed down in 34 different dispute-settlement procedures over a period of more than 150 years, from thelate 18th century to mid-20th century.
