In this new text, designed for students taking a biosystems course in a bioengineering program, the author describes and explains biological systems in engineering terms, gives an overview of classical linear systems theory, and then progresses on to a general overview of concepts in nonlinear dynamics and complexity, including a discussion of noise in nonlinear systems analysis. The book concludes with adaptive systems, including associative and non-associative learning, and adaptive resonance theory. The final chapter presents several emerging engineering paradigms that are inspired by evolutionary biology, such as cellular automata, artificial life, and DNA computation. Biological examples are used throughout the text to demonstrate the relevance of the theory to biomedicine, and cover a broad spectrum of biomedical problems from the molecular and cellular level to systems and population levels. In addition, computer exercises (using MATLAB) are included at the end of each chapter.
