Applied linguistics and semantic Web Apps: cases of mediated discursive practices
Plastina, Anna Franca
Semantic Web Apps not only represent a key force in thefield of web technology, but are found to mediate newdiscursive practices. The book focuses on their role insharpening applied linguistics research, driven by its keyfeatures of openness, interdisciplinarity and real-worldlanguage enquiry. The work sets out to explore essentialtheoretical concepts in order to position the three casestudies presented at the crossroads of applied linguisticsand within the new digital playing field of the SemanticWeb. The first study investigates discursive practicesemerging in interactive health communication through the useof semantic search engines in the light of Frame Semantics.Grounded in the Dual Coding Theory, the second case enquiresinto the new opportunities offered by the text-cloudingapproach to develop L2 learners’ reading comprehensionstrategies. The final study sources Appraisal Theory toinvestigate emotionoriented language in customer hotelreviews through the support of sentiment analyzers. This research orientation brings different strands ofapplied linguistics to the forefront of interdisciplinaryresearch in the evolving field of technology.Anna Franca Plastina is Assistant Professor of Englishlanguage and translation at the University of Calabria inItaly.
