Competence encompasses or overlaps with notions of efficiency, success, accountability, excellence and self-justification. This collection explores ways inwhich individuals, teams or groups in organizations discursively present themselves as competent to perform tasks or functions, possibly at a superior level. KATJA PELSMAEKERS & CRAIG ROLLO teach in the English section of the Department of International Business Communication at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. Katja's research interests lie in the fields of Discourse Analysis in organizational settings, situated language use and multilingual comprehension, and in English for Specific Purposes. Craig's research interests are in the fields of Discourse Analysis in organizational settings, language contact (particularly in Central Europe) and in English for Specific Purposes. TOM VAN HOUT Assistant Professor in the Humanities Faculty at Leiden University, Netherlands, and visiting lecturer in the Department of Management at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. He holds a PhD in linguistics from Ghent University and specializes in institutional communication, in particular journalism studies. PRISCILLA HEYNDERICKX Teaches Dutch and business communication at the Department ofApplied Language Studies of Lessius (Antwerp - Belgium) and is affiliated researcher of the K.U.Leuven. She is chief editor of 'Ad Rem', a journal of business communication (www.vvvz.be/AdRem ). Her research focuses on business communication. .
