The biology and treatment of cancer: understanding cancer
Pardee, Arthur B.
Stein, Gary S.
The objective of this book is to present to an informed, non-professional audience (i.e., non-cancer researchers and oncologists) our current knowledge about the biology of cancer and its treatment. This is, in effect, an oncology book for the rest of us. A timeline of major discoveries will offer a brief, historical perspective of cancer biology, diagnosis and treatment. The follows a concise overview of cancer biology and chemistry, establishing a foundation for appreciating the complexities of cancer as a disease and the challenges for effective diagnosis and therapy. New insight into cancer prevention and control will also be included. Next, the opportunities and current limitations of cancer research will be explored within the context of basic biological and clinical investigation. The involvement of laboratories in universities as well asin pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies will be explained. Roadmaps to discoveries and implementation of treatment, including necessary approvals by regulatory agencies and support for cancer research from the government and the private sector will be considered
