This book is about the local newspaper revolution in the Hindi press. It covers the rapid expansion of news papers in India's Hindi belt: UP; Bihar; Madhya Pradesh; Rajasthan; Haryana; and Jharkhand, and talks about its consequences. The author traces the beginning of growth of the local press to the mid-nineties when national newspapers started localizing their content. Based on extensive field work, the author: - analyses the reasons for the growth of the local press; - discusses the economics, and the production and distribution logistics of district editions; - looks at what constitutes local news and what does not; - examines how national, international and regional news impinge upon local news, and who covers local news; - investigates the types of Hindi language used, the extent of colloquialism and the use of English words; - presents an understanding of the political implications of local news.
