The worldwide turnaround in the use of raw materials makes the application ofmaterials on the basis of renewable resources particularly interesting. In terms of technical requirements natural fibres are excellently suited for the reinforcement of polymers. This approach is also of growing interest due to increasing crude oil prices. >From our current perspective the use of natural fibres, e.g. in composites is in line with the three essential pillars of sustainability for the future - economy, ecology and society. To ensure that this remains so in the future, the worldwide raw material turnaround and its effects onthe selection of materials must be critically examined on the basis of sustainability criteria. These aspects are commonly not included in the regular university education for engineers or natural scientists. The book will treat the value-added chain from agriculture to the final product to bring more detailedinformation on natural fibres to students as well as to industry and research.Professor Jorg Mussig, is based in the Department of Biomimetics, at the University of Applied Sciences in Bremen. His research is in the concept development of sustainable materials, structural and property relationships between materials and natural fibers und natural composite materials.
