The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the European Union (EU)
Muntschick, Johannes
This book presents a full and expert overview of the history, policies and institutional framework of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), examining regionalism and the external influence of the European Union. The SADC, an ambitious cooperation project in a number of different policy areas, is a case study on how successful regionalism can be as a strategy for political security and economic prosperity, based on the successful example of the European integration process. The author examines the situation structural model as an analytical tool to explain regionalism and presents an alternative assumption, that regionalism results from isomorphism and symbolism. The book explores trade, regional security, regional peacekeeping and regional access to electricity in the context of the SADC, with a focus on the role of South Africa and the interference of the European Union.
