This book is important because the sickest patients in the hospital reside inthe I.C.U. With our increasingly older population -- and an increase in multi-organ failure in these patients -- there is a need for many interventions, including placement of endotracheal tubes, central lines, chest and drainage tubes and heart monitoring catheters. A portable chest x-ray is obtained on thesepatients at least once a day due to the ever-changing problems these patientsface. Embedded in many 4th year radiology electives is a course on I.C.U. radiology; students understand the importance of being able to read an I.C.U. portable. They often ask to read more material on this subject but there is none available. There has been no book written during the past several decades specifically about I.C.U. radiology. Here students, their teachers, and professionals alike will find concise, practical, and immediately useful information about the principles of I.C.U. chest radiology, as well as a separate section in the book containing real-life case studies. The case studies, as well as the accompanying images, are also located on a free CD-ROM packaged with the book.Dr. Moskowitz is Clinical Professor of Radiology and Director of Education inthe Department of Radiology at the University of Connecticut Health Center.
