Cyanobacteria constitute the most widely distributed group of photosynthetic prokaryotes found in almost all realms of the earth and play an important role in Earth's nitrogen and carbon cycle. They are considered as the pioneer of oxygenic photosynthesis and played a very important role in oxygenation of the earth's atmosphere 2.5 billion years ago. The transformation of reducing atmosphere to oxidizing atmosphere was a turning point in evolutionary history of the earth and due to that the present life form is possible. They are the closest living relatives of the ancient endosymbiont that gave rise to modern-day chloroplasts. During the course of evolution they have evolved several morphological, physiological and biochemical modifications to best fit in the changing environment and represent the most successful microbial group with the ability to survive under extreme conditions. Cyanobacteria have been used as model organism to study the basic processes such as photosynthesis, nitrogen and carbon fixation, circadian rhythms of plants due to their resemblance with plant chloroplasts. Cyanobacteria: Basics to Applied helps the scientific community to explore the diverse mechanisms of cyanobacteria for the advancement of cyanobacterial abilities towards higher biofuel productivity, enhanced tolerance to environmental stress, bioactive compounds and potential for biofertilizers. Apart from this Cyanobacteria: Basics to Applied also encourages readers towards applied aspects and uniqueness of cyanobacteria in the microbial world. All chapters acquaint the reader about the characteristics and application of cyanobacteria in the welfare of human beings. Describes cyanobacterial diversity, stress biology and biotechnological aspects of cyanobacteria in three different segmentsRepresents the global importance of cyanobacteriaProvides a broad compilation of research that deals with cyanobacterial stress responses in both controlled laboratory conditions as well as in their natural environment INDICE: 1.
