Water softening with potassium chloride: process, health, and environmental benefits
McEachern, Rod
Wist, William
Lehr, Jay H.
This book is about substituting potassium chloride (KCl) for sodium chloride (NaCl) in water softeners. In addition to overviews of the basic topics of water hardness and softening, including descriptions of the chemistry and processinvolved, the book uses diverse and hard-to-find data and studies that explain and demonstrate the benefits of softening water with KCl. Data on the solubilities of KCl and NaCl at various temperatures, solubility speed, and the amount of chlorides in KCl and NaCl softened water and in the regenerant waste stream are some examples. The amount of K and Na in softened drinking water is animportant item. With this information, the authors weigh the pros and cons ofusing KCl as a water softener. They explain and illustrate that potassium chloride is an effective water softener, and that KCl is, overall, beneficial when taking into account human health and environmental considerations.
