A Roadmap for Curing Cancer, Alzheimers, and Cardiovascular Disease
Marangos, Paul J.
Very little progress has been made in curing Alzheimer's in spite of enormous efforts and expenditures. It is not the lack of money spent or talent of researchers and practitioners, but rather the lack of any strategy and organization of how research is designed and how practitioners are deployed. The purpose of A Roadmap for Curing Cancer, Alzheimer's and Cardiovascular Disease is to establish this as a national priority and expose the faults in our research plans (Part A) and then in Part B to propose solutions. The goal is to elucidate the reasons for what most informed citizens are aware of: that there is no cure, but they simply do not understand why. Neuroscience researchers have been frustrated by this reality and bringing together the causes and proposed solutions is long overdue. This book will hopefully serve as a starting point to generate serious discussions about fixing the neuroscience research system we live in and act as a springboard to reform the quest for cures and accelerate achieving that long overdue goal. First compressive analysis of the failures in curing Alzheimer's and how this is the most important issue we currently face as a societyDefines deficiencies in molecular neuroscience research, including conflicting incentives, QA/QC issues, and how to fix themProvides a rationale for FDA reform especially as it relates to Alzheimer's drugsDetails how researchers and the NIH can focus on cures for terminal disease and function more like a NASA-type partner with industryProvides an understanding of the need for more applied cellular research using vetted science and re-purposing existing drugs INDICE: The Reasons for Failure 1. The medical R&D fiasco 2. Academia is marching to the wrong drummer 3. Mavericks vs the establishment 4. The strangled dis-incentivized drug industry 5. The FDA Roadblock to Cures 6. The Liability Barrier Towards Solutions 7. Cleaning up the Academic Research Quagmire 8. Reforming the FDA 9. Enabling the Drug Industry 10. Patent and Liability Reform 11. The Public Will Make it Happen
