Techniques and tools for designing an online social network platform

The present work address the technological and methodological aspects of designing social network platforms and applications. Currently available methodologies, techniques and best practices for designing and implementing online social networks are provided. Through a detailed critique of the existing social networking websites, and at the same time a constructive discussion of potential solutions, the reader learns how to design and develop usable websites facilitating the real-time intense communication between the end users which is theprimary objective of social network websites. Presented are various methods and techniques for helping designers/developers elicit the requirements of the intended user group of the social network website they are working. Best practices, guidelines and standards help understand how a usable online social network is created. Various implementation techniques and platforms, their advantages and limitations in facilitating the selection of the appropriate platform for the implementation of the online social network are described. Visualization techniques are examined to act as the cornerstone for the designers/developers to enhance the visual representation of the social network of their end users. Finally, usability evaluation techniques are presented to help assess theusability of their online social networks and improve the user experience. The future trends in the design and use of social networks are also presented.
