Religion, Disability, and Interpersonal Violence

Lund, Emily
This book provides mental health professionals with appropriate interventions for abused persons with disabilities in religious communities. This work uses a transformative justice framework to explore research based principles that empower individuals at the intersection of gender violence, disabilities, and religion, and makes suggestions for best practices. Diverse models are examined, including religious interpretations that may unconsciously bias faith leaders’ responses toward people with disabilities potentially leading to alienation. Barriers and supports experienced by abused women with disabilities in religious communities will be described providing a basis for understanding principles for working with religious communities to provide training, to develop community partnerships, and to engage in institutional interventions to promote an inclusive culture for intimate partner violence survivors in religious communities.
