Eric Jensen argues that educators greatly underestimate students' learning potential. He even suggests that today's test-driven schooling practices may be shortchanging young brains. Pointing to IQ studies as well as neuroscience research, he explains why the idea of the ‘fixed brain’ is a myth and how certaintypes of learning conditions can actually ‘enrich’ the brain. Novelty and challenge are crucial for enrichment as are stimulating learning environments, physical exercise, and solid nutrition. Attention to the pre-school years is essential. Jensen explores the unique brains of special needs and gifted children, and how poverty and even television can place young brains at risk. Urging educators to move beyond no-frills approaches to schooling, he calls for an enrichment-based educational framework that would customize schooling to every learner and includes strategies that parents and educators can take to enrich learning in the home, the school, and the classroom.
