This volume contains 12 articles that present a mix of both theoretical perspectives and empirical studies in the area of sociology of education. This volume is divided into four sections: section one deals with education as a social system; section two focuses on issues and concerns of the education of minorities and women; section three focuses on the key issues that need to be addressed in formation and implementation of educational policies; and the last section examines certain key issues related to the adoption of vernacular language as medium of instruction and the critical insights into the role of intellectuals. The essence of this volume is that education is basically a social institution that must be responsive to social change.
