Wireless communication is transforming road travel by allowing vehicles to “talk” to an infrastructure network. This enables the vehicles to monitor road conditions, understand travel delays, anticipate potential accidents and know bottlenecks ahead. Vehicular communications allow time critical information exchange between vehicles and roadside infrastructure to ensure on-road safety for commuters as well as broadband access. The on-board units in a vehicle communicate with the roadside access points (APs) and attempt to maintain a continuous connection with the outside world. While these APs are available in large numbers across most cities, their unplanned deployment and lengthy connection establishment procedures introduce disruption. This book deals with stochasticmodels to characterize the available disruption in Wireless LANs based vehicular communication. In addition to analyzing disruption, it also discusses handover latency, inter-operator roaming and traffic congestion monitoring in the light of experimental results. This volume will be a useful addition to the libraries for students and researchers in the areas of wireless technology in conceptualising applications of 802.11 standards for the intelligent transportation systems (ITS).
