Ethics in qualitative research: controversies and contexts
Hammersley, Martyn
Traianou, Anna
Research ethics is something that all contemporary researchers have to think about and it is an important part of research methods training. This is partlydue to the expansion of ethical regulation, but also because it is an increasingly fragmented and contested topic. In this new book, Hammersley and Traianou explore the different perspectives on research ethics and the controversies that they raise. They argue that too many discussions of the subject imply a 'bland consensus' and instead they want to tackle the conflicting views head-on. To do this, they take the different ethical arguments back to their philosophical roots and demonstrate the actual effects that they have on doing research. As well as reviewing the field, the authors make a case for a situated ethics determined by particular contexts, groups and individuals. They explore this idea in relation to all aspects of the research process and a variety of case studies. More broadly, they also question the link between ethical principles and research; can we really apply set principles across all contexts and what is the effect of ethical regulation on actual research practice? This book provides us with an important opportunity to reflect on ethical issues in research, both in our own practice and also beyond. Given the expanding role of ethics in determining the direction of research, now is the right time to read it.
