The author addresses the different stages a patient may experience prior to receiving a VAD, beginning with the various reasons for gaining venous access and specific challenges this may present e.g. age, acute and chronic disease processes, anatomical anomalies and cosmetic issues. Selection of equipment, practical aspects of technique, discussing the pros and cons of the various veinsand modifications of technique that can be made in certain circumstances, areexamined in line with the general philosophy of the book. The roles of the different members of the team responsible for gaining vascular access are discussed there include the radiologist, anaesthetist, surgeon and nurse. Throughoutthe chapters a reference is made to the IV Therapy Standards published by theRoyal College of Nursing IV Therapy Forum in 2003. Each chapter is evidence based and fully referenced.
