He holds graduate degrees in sociology (Ph.D., A.M.) and psychology (Ed.M.) from Harvard University, as well as a bachelor's degree in education from Boston University. With colleagues, he has published multiple sociological research articles and is co-author, with David John Frank, of Reconstructing the University (Stanford University Press, 2006). He currently teaches sociology, psychology, and education at Rasmussen College and serves as associate editor of the Twin Cities Daily Planet, where he writes regularly about thearts.
