Chemical Dynamics at Gas-Liquid Interfaces, Volume 1 in the Developments in Physical and Theoretical Chemistry series, addresses the physical chemistry of gas transport and reactions across liquid surfaces. Gas-liquid interfaces are all around us; examples include molten V2O5/K2SO4 catalysts in industry for SO3 synthesis, surfactants in the lungs for gas exchange, fuel droplets in jet engines for combustion, and sea spray aerosols in the atmosphere for cloud formation. The reaction environment at liquid surfaces is completely unlike bulk gas or bulk liquid, and chemists must learn to readjust their conceptual framework when moving into this field. In bulk phases, molecular collisions occur from all directions, but gas-liquid interfaces are inherently isotropic. Surface solvent molecules either redirect incoming molecules back into the gas phase, or they momentarily trap the gas molecules at the surface, allowing reaction, solvation, and diffusion to proceed from the interfacial zone. This resource aids scientists who are transitioning to this field by offering the appropriate thermodynamic background and then surveying the current state of research. This is a particularly exciting time in the field of interfacial chemistry because atmospheric scientists are beginning to appreciate the complexities of gas-liquid interfaces in the context of aerosols.
