The book has the aim of illustrating applications of mathematics to various processes (physiological or artificial) involving flowing blood. Examples: hemorheology, microcirculation, coagulation, kidney filtration, dialysis, etc. For each subject the book contains an historical overview.
Mathematical models are used to simulate processes normally occurring in flowing blood and to predict the effects of dysfunctions (e.g. bleeding disorders, renal failure), as well as the effects of therapies with an eye to improving treatments. Most of the models have a completely new approach and allow to perform simulations on a patient-specific basis . The book should be advertised to libraries of mathematics, medicine, biology, and bioengineering.
The book is addressed mainly to mathematicians interested in medical applications, but also to clinicians such as hematologists, nephrologists, cardio-surgeons, and to bioengineers. Some parts can be read by anybody and some require specific knowledge of mathematics.
