This volume presents multiple idiographic, archaeological studies of vernacular watercraft from around the world. It is not the purpose of this volume to synthesize all vernacular cultures, but instead to demonstrate how the particular data recovered by an archaeological investigation can be used to make inferences about culture. By publishing multiple case studies in a single volume, the thematic exploration of cultural adaptation appeals to a wide audience. Ultimately this volume on the archaeology of vernacular watercraft provides a better understanding of the application of idiographic ship construction data to larger processes of cultural adaptation.
