Democracy in transition: political participation in the European Union

This volume investigates the causes of limited or declining political participation in Europe, and explores a range of factors contributing to political apathy of the kind exemplified in public or individual indifference towards wider political practices, events and movements. At the same time it examines new,unconventional forms of political participation corresponding to the rapidly changing technological innovations. The volume includes three groups of critical essays in the form of theoretical approaches, research on the role of the new media as determinants of new patterns of political participation, and case or empirical studies. All material is based on the underlying theme aiming to explore, from a range of perspectives - uniting a theoretical orientation withan empirical approach - the worrying trends towards political apathy and indifference in the context of the ongoing process of European integration, as well as to analyze the emergence of alternative conceptions and forms of engagement in social and political phenomena.
