This Third Edition reflects recent improvements in the understanding of renewable resource economics and has been revised to address three main themes: theimportance of individual economic incentives; the over-riding importance of uncertainty; and the value of diversity. With regard to individual economic incentives, it is now becoming generally realized that ‘top down’ management has widely failed, and in the case of marine fisheries, management systems based on annual total catch quotas have resulted in severe overcapacity of fishing fleets. Mathematical models of individual fisherman's behavior help to explain this unanticipated consequence of quota-based management, and they also indicate alternate approaches that promise to be more successful. The over-riding importance of uncertainty has been almost completely ignored in the field of renewable resource management. However, uncertainty is dominant in resource and environmental management. Specific strategies to deal with uncertainty are desperately needed, and this book provides theoretical support for precautionary management. The value of diversity is reflected in a discussion addressing how management models are limited to single species or populations, but biodiversity itself has economic value and needs to be taken into account. This new edition also discusses the basic principles of resource management and describes a wide variety of mathematical models in fisheries, forestry, and wildlife economics as well as in the regulation of resource industries. Elementary instructional material on the basic mathematical techniques of dynamic modeling and optimization methods are included.Colin W. Clark, PhD, is Emeritus Professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. His research interests include behavioral ecology and the economics of natural resources. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada,he received his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Washington in 1958.In 2000, Dr. Clark received the once-in-a-decade award from the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists for the First Edition of Mathematical Bioeconomics (1976), cited as a ‘Publication of Enduring Quality’.
