Power quality indices in liberalized markets
Carpinelli, Guido

Verde, Paolo
This book provides a comprehensive analysis of power quality indices to quantify the quality of delivered energy in power systems. There is a particular emphasis on presenting a global perspective, highlighting the link between newlyliberalized markets and power quality indices, and discussing ways for improving power quality in these regions. Both traditional indices, which are currently used in Standards and Recommendations, and new and emerging indices usefulfor solving power quality problems following deregulation are examined. For each index, the authors look at the physical meaning, theoretical aspects, measurement procedures and future developments, and numerical applications demonstrate the advantages and limitations. In the final chapter of the book, indicesare introduced in order to characterize power quality in distributed systems with embedded generation (EG). EG is electricity generation which is connectedto the distribution network rather than the National Grid. It generates a smaller, more economical energy supply such as Combined Heat and Power (CHP) or renewable generation. These indices are also useful for understanding, at planning stage, where embedded generation can be installed to achieve the most significant improvement of power quality throughout the system. The book concludeswith a chapter on new power quality indices for non-stationary and transient waveforms.
