Surface forces are essential for the stabilization of dispersion and for adhesion. Back in 1991 Academic Press published a a very nice systematic introduction by J. Israelachvili. Since then, our understanding of surface forces has progressed significantly, partially driven by the development of new techniquesand by the development of nanotechnology. With the occurrence of nanotechnology surface effects become more and more important. The book by Butt and Kappl gives a systematic introduction into the topic. Starting with intermolecular forces, the different surfaces forces are discussed. A major part is devoted tosurface forces between solid surfaces in liquid media because of its high relevance for the stabilization of dispersions, for adhesion and friction. In addition, surface forces between liquid-vapor interfaces, which are important forthe stability of foams, and between liquid-liquid interfaces, relevant for the stability of emulsions, are discussed. The authors describe not only theoretical concepts to understand and predict surface forces, but also experimental techniques. Practical applications with up to date examples and motivating exercises encourage the reader to get into the topic.
