This study of contemporary American fiction discusses work by critically acclaimed and internationally influential authors such as Don DeLillo, Philip Roth, Carol Shields, Cormac McCarthy, Annie Proulx and Paul Auster, and situates them in a range of literary-historical contexts. The book identifies key trendsin American fiction and analyses the main developments in critical thinking over the last twenty years. It is divided into four chapters, each of which focuses on detailed readings of three novels. It places these in the context of debates about postmodernism and realism; gender and sexuality; race, ethnicity and multiculturalism; and narrative and genre. The objective of each chapter is to explore the ways in which texts such as White Noise, American Psycho, TheStone Diaries and Cold Mountain can be read in the light of current critical approaches, and can in turn shed light on these approaches. There is a strong emphasis throughout on intertextuality, exploring connections between primary texts, and between the discourses of critical and creative writing. The conclusion sketches out possible future pathways for navigating the complex terrain of contemporary American fiction.
