The subject of this book is eddy current nondestructive evaluation, which is the most commonly practiced method of electromagnetic nondestructive evaluation (NDE). The emphasis is on a clear presentation of the concepts, laws and relationships of electricity and magnetism upon which eddy current inspection methods are founded. The book is intended for graduate engineers and scientists who seek a deeper understanding of electromagnetic methods of NDE than can be found in a guide for practitioners. Signals obtained using many common eddy current probe types in various testing environments are explained. For the reader who has not taken senior-level undergraduate courses in electromagnetism and who may be meeting certain mathematical and physical concepts for the first time, these are introduced in sufficient detail and summarized in Appendices, for easy reference. Worked examples and simple calculations which can be done by hand are distributed throughout the text. These, and more complex examples and assignments found at the end of each chapter, are designed to impart a working knowledge of the connection between electromagnetic theory and the practical measurements described. The intention is that the reader will become equipped with sufficient knowledge to optimize routine eddy current NDE inspections, or design new ones.
