Instrumentation and Control Systems, Third Edition addresses the basic principles of modern instrumentation and control systems, including examples of the latest devices, techniques and applications in a clear and readable style. Unlike the majority of books in this field, only a minimal prior knowledge of mathematical methods is assumed. The book focuses on providing a comprehensive introduction to the subject, with Laplace presented in a simple and easily accessible form, complimented by an outline of the mathematics that would be required to progress to more advanced levels of study. Taking a highly practical approach, the author combines underpinning theory with numerous case studies and applications throughout, to enable the reader to apply the content directly to real-world engineering contexts. Coverage includes smart instrumentation, DAQ, crucial health and safety considerations, and practical issues such as noise reduction, maintenance and testing. PLCs and ladder programming is incorporated in the text, as well as new information introducing the various software programs used for simulation. For this new edition, a discussion of dependability has been included and the discussion of smart systems extended and an introduction to radio telemetry for data transmission. A discussion of interactive and non-interactive forms of PID control and integrator windup have been added and it also now includes a revised discussion of steady-state error and a discussion of fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks for control applications. Extend discussions of steady-state error, and of bus systems used with control networks and introduces Fieldbus. An Appendix has been included on the basic features of the z-transform. The overall approach of this book makes it an ideal text for all introductory level undergraduate courses in control engineering and instrumentation. The subject is broad enough to fulfill the needs of an audience from different fields of science and engineering besides traditional electrotechnical and computer engineering. Students that need an introduction to instrumentation and control engineering with no previous background in control engineering will find in this book an easy way to learn. Ph.D. students undertaking projects that involve the development of sensors or diagnostics, as well as the development of control applications could also benefit from the book.  Assumes minimal prior mathematical knowledgeHighly accessible student-centred textIncludes an extensive collection of problems, case studies and applications, with a full set of answers at the back of the bookHelps placing theory in real-world engineering contexts New to this edition  Includes a revised discussion of steady-state error and a discussion of fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks for control applicationsIncludes an Appendix on the basic features of the z-transformIntroduces a discussion of dependability and the discussion of smart systems extendedPresents a discussion of interactive and non-interactive forms of PID control and integrator windup INDICE: 1.
