This book captures the trends and major achievements in the art of making chiral chemical compounds on an industrial scale by assembling contributions fromworld-leaders in the respective areas. Case studies are included on the development of as many large-scale enantioselective processes as possible. As a result, the book collates interesting and useful information within a context where it can be easily found. The contributions illustrate the relevant environments and situations, such as time pressure, the fit of the catalytic step into the over-all synthesis, or competition with other synthetic approaches, as well as the typical problems encountered in the various phases, such as finding/developing the catalyst, optimization of the process or choice of equipment, etc. Both successful and unsuccessful approaches to solve these problems are described.Hans-Ulrich Blaser is chief technology officer at Solvias. He carried out hisdoctoral research with A. Eschenmoser at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, where he received his PhD in 1971. Between 1971 and 1975 he heldpostdoctoral positions at the University of Chicago, Harvard University, and Monsanto. Over 20 years at the Ciba-Geigy Central Research Laboratories (1976-1996) he gained practical experience in R&D within the fine chemicals and pharmaceutical industry, which continued at Novartis (1996-1999). Dr. Blaser's main interest is selective catalysis with an emphasis on enantioselective catalysts, and during his industrial career he has developed and implemented numerouscatalytic routes for agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals both as a project leader and section head. Hans-Jurgen Federsel gained his PhD in organic chemistry from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, where he is now an Associate Professor. He is a renowned specialist in the field of process R&D, where he has spent his entire professional career, spanning a periodof 30 years. Starting off as a bench chemist at what was formerly Astra, he has occupied positions both as line and project manager. After the merger with Zeneca, he was the Head of Projects Management before being appointed a Director of Science in Global Process R&D at the beginning of 2004, which also brought the title of Senior Principal Scientist. Dr. Federsel publishes in peer-reviewed journals and books and frequently lectures all over the world.
