The Oxford Dictionary of the Jewish Religion, 2nd ed. will focus on recent and changing rituals in the Jewish community-for example, the growth of baby-naming ceremonies and the founding of gay/lesbian synagogues-have made the need for a thoroughly updated new edition both apparent and pressing. Under the editorship of Adele Berlin, the Robert H. Smith Professor of Hebrew Bible at the University of Maryland and co-editor of the Jewish Study Bible, the new editionwill incorporate updated bibliographies, biographies of those 20th-century individuals who have shaped the recent thought and history of Judaism, and an index with alternate spellings. Headwords from the previous edition will be revised, and cross-references added, to increase ease of navigation.
