This book emerges from a study of nursing education by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, as part of its Preparation for the Professions series. It is written for administrators and faculty in nursing schools and programs. The profession of nursing in the United States is at a significantmoment. Since the last national nursing education study almost forty years ago, profound changes in science, technology, and the nature and settings of nursing practice have reshaped the field. As a result, a significant gap between nursing practice and nursing education exists. The authors assert that the current nursing shortage and practice-education gap must be addressed through both structural changes and changes in the approach to teaching and learning, recommending four controversial yet essential changes in the way nurse educators attempt to foster student learning. Nursing education must evolve, from withinthe schools, the programs, and the profession. Educating Nurses is a call foraction that equips nurse educators and administrators with the information needed to transform nursing education and fill hospitals and the medical system with well-qualified nurses. A volume in the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teachings Preparation for the Professions series, the book discusses key topics for the future of the field and offers revolutionary recommendations for change. The four changes, or shifts, are: 1. From a focus on covering decontextualized knowledge to an emphasis on teaching for a sense of salience, situated cognition an action in particular situations; 2. From a sharp separation of clinical and classroom teaching to integration of classroom and clinicalteaching; 3. From and emphasis on critical thinking to an emphasis on clinical reasoning and multiple ways of thinking that include critical thinking; and 4. From an emphasis on socialization and role-taking to an emphasis on formation."
