Small and micro combined heat and power (CHP) systems: advanced design, performance, materials and applications
Beith, B.
Small- and micro-CHP (combined heat and power) systems are a form of cogeneration technology suitable for buildings, commercial and industrial facilities, and local heat networks and microgrids. One of the benefits of using cogeneration plant is a vastly improved energy efficiency, achieving 80-90% energy output from the same amount of fuel, instead of merely 40-50% using conventional systems. By optimising use of fuel, this also contributes to a reduction in both carbon and waste heat emissions, both of which can have negative environmental impacts. Another major benefit is energy security, especially where reliable and unconventional fuel supply networks exist, e.g. in facilities using process wastes as fuel. An economic benefit to add to these is that excess power can be sold back onto the local and even national grid, providing an external return on investment. This book provides a systematic and comprehensive reference on small- and micro-CHP technology. The initial section reviews the economic and regulatory issues along with the integration of technology into distributed energy systems. The development and design of advanced engine, turbine, and fuel cell technology is reviewed, combined with a review of applicable fuelsand additionally a review of absorption-refrigeration cooling technology and energy storage systems, and routes toward performance optimisation.. The finalsection reviews the application of small- and micro-CHP technologies in the range of applicable settings, from domestic and small commercial buildings and community-based/district-heating networks through to health and leisure centres, institutions, and process industries.
