This book provides a multiscale and multidisciplinary perspective on the geology and geophysics of Azerbaijan, a country characterized by a unique tectonic and geological setting including the Greater and Lesser Caucasus, the Talysh Mountains, and the Caspian and Kur Basins. Geological and geophysical data shed light on the principles of the Earth’s evolution within the region under study, seismic activity related to interaction of the Afro-Arabian and Eurasian lithospheric plates and on the distribution of oil, gas and mineral deposits including large polymetallic, copper, gold-bearing, iron-ore and other deposits. An explanation of Azerbaijan’s near-surface and deep geological structure is achieved on the basis of an integrative analysis of stratigraphic, morphological, lithological, tectonic and geophysical methods (ground, shipborne, airborne and satellite) combining not only Russian and Azerbaijani published data, but also new geophysical-geological data.
The book addresses the needs of researchers focused on geology, geophysics and environmental sciences but is also of interest to anyone looking to learn more about natural phenomena in Azerbaijan, a beautiful country situated at the border between Europe and Asia.
