This is a book of definitions of terms around serious games and simulations. As any good sim designer would want, this book is non-linear. Readers can go through it from beginning to end, but they can also skip around. As in a dictionary, many terms will be familiar, but many will not, and the organization mayshed some new light. The book is broken up into topics. The topics have a heading that introduces the concepts and highlights some key terms. The topic then contains a list of entries. Each entry is a definition, usually one or two paragraphs, and includes references to other entries or even complete topics. Entries are cross-referenced and an index lists the more than 600 entries and definitions. The book first addresses genres, including sims, immersive learning simulation, other learning to do genres, like games, computer games, and traditional educational genres. After providing an overview of simulation elements, the books addresses its actions and results, including basic actions, middle skills (more complicated actions), and desired results. Then the books defines specific simulation elements, including maps, units, AI, state-based systems, work process, and soft skills, as well as other elements including linear content, game elements, pedagogical elements, tasks and levels, display, community and basic inputs. The book then takes on Formal Learning Programs, including learning goals, program goals, groups for formal learning programs, programcreation, program deployments, skill cones feedback, and evaluation strategies and the analysis of learning. The book wraps up with several simulation casestudies.
